Class Descriptions
Bikram
Bikram yoga is a demanding series of 26 postures and two breathing exercises, suitable for all ages and levels of ability. Half of the postures are performed while standing, half are performed on the floor, and all are repeated twice during each 90 minute session. Bikram Choudhury designed the series in the mid-1960′s using a combination of Eastern discipline and Western science. The sequence of the postures works synergistically and cumulatively, each preparing the body for the next. Each posture energizes and heals the body, while slowing down normal deterioration that comes with aging. The body returns to a more balanced state of health.
Barkan
Jimmy Barkan was motivated to explore beyond the Bikram series to include more of the 200 postures coming from Calcutta, and Bishnu Ghosh, youngest brother of Paramahansa Yogananda. The Barkan Method incorporates the same 26 postures and two breathing exercises, but also integrates postures from other styles of yoga to create variations and even greater range of motion. Jimmy has found that even though consistency is important to measure results, daily variations are necessary to challenge, excite, and help students become unlimited in their practice. One aspect of the vinyasa series is to produce more of a cardiovascular workout. By moving through traditional Sun and Moon salutations it also strengthens the upper torso, core and shoulders.
